now that you know my favorite collection from bafweek, i want to share my favorite show. i love the whole process of a show, from start to finish….just makes my heart flutter. in my opinion, the most successful ones convey a clear concept, which is even more important to me than if the actual garments are even my style. to be able to have the idea(s) understood in those few seconds of runway time is impressive. from the choice of lighting, music, pace of the model’s struts and stances when they pose for the photographer, pure excitement. and then there can be little clues to the story from how they choose to (or not chose to) decorate and use props on the runway.

it’s theatrical.

so now details from juana de arco. the collection is about an imaginary trip from la paz all the way to the pacific, passing by different places and picking up muses along the way. the show felt like a carnival with archways of bright handicrafts and flowers for the models to pass through.

colors from the 80s felt happy, innocent. hair was braided and decked out with pom poms, scarves and tiny sea ships! loose silhouettes like waves, superimposed textures, stamped florescent textures, embroidered fabrics…just a feast bursting ahead to summer.

this was my favorite garment from the collection. the tiny triangular shapes gradually gaining size towards the hem like a gorgeous palette moved in the best way. (also reminds of me of paper mache.) other ensembles used the same idea in variations for belts, sleeves and hems.

the grand finish felt like a bright party when a surprise brass marching band of men in red suits came in from the end of the runway while the models did their final walk through tossing confetti in the air. happy and so theatrical. color, color, color.

my favorite collection from BAFweek was by designer cecilia gadea.  simple dresses with tons of movement from really detailed cutouts in lavendar and greys.  i snapped a lot of pictures, but i thought seeing the dresses float down the runway was so gorgeous! from the finish of the show:

max and i created some rubber stamps together, can you tell i have summer on my mind? (and can you tell which one max designed?)  we first made our pictures with very soft lead that easily rubbed (reverse side) onto inexpensive white erasers.  then i cut them out with an exacto knife.  fun & easy! max was thrilled to see his “guy” in print.  make your own with these directions.

truth: i could eat my way through buenos aires and journal about it everyday.  thanks to pip in the city and an organic lunch at bio restaurant together, today was delicious!  the picture above is a wonderful bead/jewelry shop she introduced me to.  and our postre…  coconut flan with dulce de leche for her, apple crumble with sesame helado for me.  yup, it was a sweet day.  hmm, i think in another life i would have been a food blogger.

check it – i’m published! my photograph is featured in a forbes traveler column, which can be read in msnbc’s travel section here.  the gorgeous shop pictured is la merceria, a marie antionette atmosphere decked out with soaps, candles, and pretty accessories, located in palermo soho.  a clipping about buenos aires in the article:

For a hot design district with a friendlier exchange rate, check out Buenos Aires. The city mixes Parisian chic with a casual, rocker feel, and is a great place to score edgy menswear and leather goods. Women have long flocked to the old-world elegance of Recoleta. But in order to go beyond large international labels, you’ll need to wander through Palermo Soho. Although there are standout stores such as shoe-mecca Mishka or Sabater Hermanos—a designer bath goods shop decked out with cute beakers and lab flasks—the fun is in wandering the side streets.

previously, the urban travel guide gridskipper also posted my photo of el ateneo bookstore after i shared a quick run down from my first visit to bsas.

finally! some jewelry orders that have been waiting to be sent out are now making their way to brazil, singapore and all over north america.  huge sigh of relief.  i haven’t been able to bring myself to design anything new until i shipped these first, so a special thanks to some very patient customers. sometimes setbacks show you the very best in people.  (on a more personal note, thanks also to my friend meg, for making my world a brighter place this past month, and in general. you are one in a million.)

+ two very different necklaces, both of which i adore: handfelted pink flowers and a tintype frame.

+ the liquid sky arts shop has been updated.  i can tell you from experience that kathleen’s wrapping is so gorgeous, you’ll feel like like that alone is worth an order.

joy has me featured today in her new “currently loving” series, where she asks designers and artists what they are really into at the moment.  see all the details about my items in this picture at the oh joy! blog.  which reminds me…it’s been a while since i’ve made a collage of my “current crushes.” (see previous ones here, & here.)  lists of influences, cravings, colors…being creative for me is pulling from all sides of life and filling your hands with your own ingredients to build with. so it’s fascinating to see what other artists are into, it’s like a backstage look at what is fueling their work.

milagros.jpg

milagros schmoll, thread drawing.

inspired by fashion week, i whipped up another design in embroidery threads.  fashion photography and portraits fascinate me to no end, perhaps because i love change and transformation and those mediums accommodate both.  with milagros, either walking down the runway with giant flowers in her cropped hair or standing right next to you, the young girl is even more beautiful in person.  (her name means “miracles.”)  p.s.  after tumbling upon a great photographer,  i just realized that a portrait i was particularly smitten with also happens to be her little sister. small world! i’m a bit on cloud nine this morning because yesterday kicked off fashion week in buenos aires. (hearts!) don’t you love the pea green paper necklace on this ensemble? paper and geometry were a big influence in the nadine zlotogora collection. (for those back at home/up north, we’re in preview for spring/summer 07 08…just in case you forgot it’s still winter here, wink.)  i’ll share more favorites when i get some time to go through all my pictures.  i’m headed out again in a few hours for some more incredible design and energy that only porteños have.
