I’m so relieved that it’s pouring rain today – instead of beckoning the call to go outside for a bike ride as planned, I can instead dedicate some time curled up by the windows while going through the enormous stacks of books I have neatly ordered all over my dining table. One I’ve been feasting on just came out by one of my favorite bloggers, Joy, and author Meg called Creative, Inc.: The Ultimate Guide to Running a Successful Freelance Business. Its packed with wonderful ideas and encouragement, I’m taking lots of notes! Check out this adorable stop motion trailer for the book:

I love this particular Q& A from an interview that Jordan just shared on her blog.

Jordan: I like that you included “Positive attitude” as one of your nine qualities of a successful freelancer. Forgive this question for sounding too chipper, why do you think a positive attitude is so important?

Joy: A positive attitude is everything. As a freelancer, you get work by convincing others that your work and skills (and ultimately you) are worth hiring for a project. Clients (and people in general) respond far better to positive people because who wants to be around (or working with) a Debbie Downer? Also, a positive attitude doesn’t mean you need to be uber happy all the time. It’s more about being able to stay positive even when some projects or clients aren’t your favorite, when thing aren’t going as planned, and being able to make the best out of any situation.

This is just one of many of the reasons I feel so drawn to Joy: her positive attitude and ability to churn out inspiration and beauty around her- she effortlessly radiates that in all of the creative work that she touches. Congrats on the new book, Joy!

Let’s just say that I may think twice before throwing out my painting palettes…

Sorry for my absence! I forget how June is such a busy month – full of so many celebrations, birthdays, holidays, happy visits and enjoying the outdoors. Blogging is a total indulgence for me as it is, so when my days get packed and there isn’t any time all to myself, this is one of those things that naturally goes to the end of the line.

Don’t worry, we’ve just sent off the last of our out of town guests, summer solstice has passed, bringing in the longer, hopefully more lazy days of July. Maybe this extra daylight beating into my room is to give me that feeling of encouragement to catch you up on some inspiring images I’ve been enjoying lately…

Amanda Brooks, the author of I Love Your Style, sitting in a field of queen anne’s lace, the lush grassy meadow, the gold dress and bare feet. Somehow this all seems right, especially if she were me and there were a he named Marcus, taking the picture. Note to self. (Is this how all good pictures are constructed? Ha! Don’t laugh, take notes.)

Dear Sofia, I agree. I think that God wants us to have fun. He made us to enjoy life, after all. We can’t be serious ALL OF THE TIME.

I have many ideas of what the ideal studio looks like. Natural light is essential. This attic space is pretty close to what my previous studio looked like if you edited it with pewter colored walls, still high ceilings but no skylights, same bookcase, same easel. The pattern of the colorful rug and the little armchair to sit and study books and the non-distracting whitewash background is so so great. But the real reason I saved this image? the Mobil Oil Pegasus hung on the wall. (!) There is something mystical about that guy. When I was a little girl in living in Detroit, (We moved to Seattle when I was ten) I had a white t-shirt of the softest cotton with that exact red logo on the front. Every time I wore that shirt, I felt invincible. I love the way that he’s lifting off into the sky here and the formation of the bricks just pointing him upward. Yes, this room is just about perfect. image source unknown.

I’m still posting regularly on my tumblr and the other day this scene got a popular response. Everyone loves bicycles. The simplicity, the freedom, the nostalgia, the fresh air, the exercise, oh the glory!! Which reminds me, I created a facebook group: Yes, I Bike in High Heels. Now just think about the practicality of this declaration. It is difficult to walk several city blocks in heels. But those same pair shoes on a bike? Just think of the ground you can cover! And the pretty condition your shoes will be in when you get to your destination== like new. Oh yes.

Surrounding me tonight are geometric towers and triumphant mini pillars of the loveliest Jenny selected books. As I type this, I’m simultaneously inhaling gooey warm secret-ingredient chocolate chip cookies fresh from my oven. Midnight snack time you know. (My recipe is a secret, but if you come over, I am happy to bake them for you.) Anyway, I actually have new furniture built out of all the books I have checked out of the Seattle Public Library and two full laundry baskets full of oversize books in my hallway. I’m not even exaggerating for description’s sake. Cross my pajamas. I don’t know why, at this sacred midnight snack hour, I want to get on the computer now and share this sudden burst of returned bibliophilism with you, except that it makes me happy like a midnight snack can.

I guess it’s these kinds of things in life, when reclaimed, are golden. I think I just went through the longest reading drought (possibly the longest one in my life?) and all I can say is… it’s so good to be back! For you fellow mothers out there, I will equate this feeling of self refound to something monumentally understood in our tribe. It’s a bit like after having baby and then one day, getting back into those pre-pregnancy jeans. You know the ones. THE SKINNIES. Oh yes. I recently experienced this first hand. It was a crazy mountain heap of a laundry day and I might just have to say that being a space cadet is a facet of my personality that I will no longer berate – because it was this magnificent side of me that allowed me to absentmindedly grab the wrong pair of pants. Most all ladies at this point are saying why why oh why is she still keeping those in her closet! She should have burned the evidence of those by now! Why torture herself?! But honestly, I had just forgotten they were around.

And so it was with reading. I had forgotten. The absentminded state of pregnancy – which oddly enough – served my reading habit into high function the first time around – turned an opposite effect these eight years later – I just wanted movies and naps and movies and pretty much in that rotation. And now, as baby is nearing his first birthday sometime this summer, I finally come back to lovely lovely books. The smell of books, the feel of the weight of books in my arms, the finale of a last page being finished. Have I mentioned the great ottomans books make for a cup of tea next to my bed?

Forgetting is somewhat of a theme for me these past couple years. Sometimes I take pictures throughout my day to remember what passed because otherwise, I fear it will be gone forever, like a good friend moved away without saying goodbye. Were they ever here? Did it ever happen? Especially these days, as a new (again) parent – in baby’s first year everything can seem like a blur and so capturing little things around me has been helpful. The above photo of Coco & Igor and Artists at Work was one of my daily snapshots — I read both months ago, before the bookmobile moved into my bedroom again, and anyway, I had mixed feelings/higher expectations for both books you see.

Well, my secret-ingredient cookies are at last finished and baby doesn’t sleep in. Time to turn in. You might not read this till morning, which means weekend! xo

bookmark: you might have noticed i added a “currently reading” list on my sidebar. While this is nowhere near representing the beautiful mess I am describing to you right now, I’m going to be adding some favorites from time to time that I think are worth mentioning.

+ The Art Spirit by Robert Henri

I’ve written and spoken about this book many times before, and there is good reason. This compilation of letters, notes and lectures to the Robert Henri’s students are loosely organized by technical advice, inspiration and teachings that I come back to again and again. A favorite aspect of this book is how I can turn to any page and just jump in. I can’t help but feel like he was somehow a mentor of mine when I growing up… I found a paperback edition when I was around 15 at a used book store and it’s been dogeared and referenced ever since. No artist should be without this one! (On a side note, I’ve also noticed the my reactions to his paintings I’ve been fortunate enough to see at museums strike a very personal chord with me, the same feeling I’ve had before when seeing art professor’s works in galleries have on me. Since this book is all in text, it was much like being taught at school, without ever seeing the professor’s personal work but learning from their style and being schooled in everything they could pass on to me. Then: seeing everything come together in their vision on the wall, understanding how every brushstroke from their hand came onto the canvas for the first time… you understand that work more intensly, more intimatly, it’s a a non visual language that you understand from that mentor relationship.)

+ The Creative Habit: Learn It and Use It for Life by Twyla Tharp

I know a book is worthy of teaching me something great when instead of just sitting down and plugging through it, I reach for my notebook and pen and cannot stop taking notes through the length of it. There is an impression (stereotype?) out there that artists, because of their independent nature and willingness to change up the rules, don’t work well or are unreliable and flightly, etc. Though I know that holds up for some, Twyla proves in a stern fashion that there is a great discipline to craft, and it takes more than luck or talent to fulfill that potential. This one will whip you into shape!

+ Trust the Process: An Artist’s Guide to Letting Go

If you are going through a rough patch, creatively speaking. If you are lacking confidence. If you are not sure what step is next. If you doubt that you should even start on the path of being an artist. If you don’t know where or why to begin. This is the book for you, truly a favorite. (Hey, you might even avoid some psychotherapy picking this one up.)

+ Walking in This World by Julia Cameron

I read this so long ago, but had to include it in my list because I remember so many lightbulbs going off over my head while reading it. It was like a bouquet of wattage floating over my red hair, but I know I need to go back and reread it to recall exactly what it was. Most any Julia Cameron book will bring the artist to a good place in my opinion, and she certainly has a lot to choose from. I’ve read most of her books, but this one in particular is special because it inspired the theme to my blog from one little line, “When we express our creativity, we are a conduit for the great creator to explore, express, and expand it’s divine nature and our own. We are like songbirds. When one of us gives voice to our true nature, it is contagious and others soon give tongue as well.” (Bold added so ya’d notice the name there, grin.) I have tried to live by that since those words sunk in years ago, it’s become the spine in my work and I love to feel my enthusiasm build when I hear it flowing in my mind.

What about you, do you have some favorite encouraging books for artists? I’d love to hear your recommendations!

+ Letters to a Young Poet by Rainer Maria Rilke

Lisa suggested this one as one of her favorites and I have to agree, there’s a reason it’s popular among artists! Go grab a copy if you haven’t had the chance to read it, it’s a slim little collection of letters, but you might want to take your time and savor it.
